BOYNE FALLS – Terry Delcamp had trouble with her golf swing, but kept finding ways to recover with her putter and win the 18th GAM Women’s Senior Championship presented by Golf Digest.

“I feel awesome, but it’s a relief for me to be done,” Delcamp said after shooting a closing 80 for 159 and a two-shot win over Southfield’s Shelly Weiss, who closed with a 78 for 161 on The Alpine Golf Course at Boyne Mountain Resort Tuesday.

“I am so relieved it is unbelievable. It was like – get me to the barn. I told my playing partners my lug wrench is stripped. I kept pulling it out of the bag and putting the wheels back on like six times. It was so hard to play.”

It was a first GAM state title for Delcamp, who said swing changes she made earlier in the summer started breaking down once she caught first-round leader Claudia Cenko of Beverly Hills on the front nine.

“When the pressure starts building you revert,” she said after accepting the Sara Wold Trophy for winning the overall championship in the flighted event. “I feel awesome now. I bladed a few shots. I hit a few fat. I wasn’t consistent at all, so standing looking over that last shot over the water at 18, I was oh, no, just get one over.”

Two-time champion Barb Schmid of Grand Rapids shot 80 for 162 and third place and also won the Super Seniors (over-60 title), and Cenko hit it in the water hazard off the tee at 18 and struggled to an 88 for 164 and fourth place.

Delcamp had a three-shot lead heading to the 15th hole, and hit her approach shot on the par 4 just off the green.

“Then I double-hit the chip, and I’m thinking you got to be kidding,” she said of the resulting double-bogey 6. “I didn’t even know the rule for sure. I just knew it was close again.”

Delcamp said one club in her bag did behave consistently over the two days.

“What saved me was my putter,” she said. “I made a good one at 10 after being in the trees to save par, and coming in at 16 and 17 I made five-six footers to save par.”
