Mental Mondays: Think About The Third Shot
Before teeing off on a Par 5, think about the third shot. Identify a distance that gives you a reasonable chance to hit the green. Subtract that from the hole’s length and you’ll have an idea about how far you need to hit a shot from the tee.
Lets say that the challenge ahead is a 495 yard par five and that your most reasonable chance to hit the green is from 110 with a nine iron. That means that your first two shots need to cover 385 yards.
There are a lot of different ways to approach this. Two 193 yard shots (5 woods, perhaps) cover the distance, as would a 230 yard drive and a 155 yard iron. What you do depends upon your confidence and distance with the various clubs in your bag. The important thing is to get that last shot in position for your favored club.
