Wells Fargo Championship Past Winners and History
Although essentially under the same corporate sponsorship since its inception in 2003, the Wells Fargo Championship has done a neat little song and dance around its name. The tournament began as the Wachovia Chammpionship in 2003. In 2008, Wells Fargo bought Wachovia and dropped Wachovia from the tournament name. That was part of a corporate strategy to eliminate Wachovia as a brand in favor of Wells Fargo.
Then the Great Recession hit, and Wells Fargo dropped its name from the title (although it continued to be the sponsor). The image of a financial company sponsoring a golf tournament in the midst of a financial crisis didn’t seem helpful. However, in 2011, with the danger presumably past, the event returned as the Wells Fargo Championship. Wells Fargo is signed through 2014.
Held at Quail Hollow Club in Charlotte, North Carolina, the Wells Fargo has established itself as a favorite of the Tournament Players and was almost immediately recognized as one of the Tour’s better venues. Indeed, the Tournament attracts Tiger Woods (not an easy thing to do), who won the 2007 title. The course’s layout boasts one of the tougher finishes on Tour, with 16, 17 and 18 referred to as “The Green Mile.”
