I have always wondered what the ruling is in a situation where you can not place your ball on the green without it rolling away. I never thought it would happen to me so I never bothered to figure out what the proper ruling is, but of course, last time I played it happened. It was on a par three and it was a little wet. My ball plugged, on the green, into the side of a small slope. When I got up to the green, I marked my ball, cleaned it, and then attempted to place it. The ball would not sit where I marked it - it just rolled towards the hole. What is the proper ruling here? Do you let the ball roll? Do you take nearest point of relief no closer to the hole?
thanks

Your last statement, closest point of relief that is no closer to the hole, is correct.  One should not press down on the ball to prevent it from moving.  If the ball, when placed in its original position, moves, you then place it slightly further away and repeat the process until you find a spot where it will remain motionless.

At that point, you might be wise to not ground your putter when taking a stance.  If the ball were to start moving again, you would get a penalty.
