When you think of heading down to Arizona to enjoy some sunshine and great golf, you are often encouraged by the bitter cold and snow that surrounds many of us during winter. Obviously, escaping the Winter blues is something we all like to do, and when you are heading to Arizona during that time of year you are almost guaranteed great weather and unbelievable course conditions.
The thing is, most people don’t consider Arizona/desert as a great Spring and even Summer golf destination. They picture scorching temperatures coupled with dried out greens and fairways - an image that doesn’t exactly conjure up relaxing thoughts. However, golf in the desert can be wonderful even in the hotter months, and the cost of lodgings and green fees is dramatically lower. Also, just like in the Winter, the weather is sun, sun, and more sun.
A typical 7 night golf package including (5 rounds of golf at top Scottsdale or Tucson based courses, first class accomodations, and a rental car) can set you back in the neighborhood of $2000 plus. However, between late May and September the same package will drop to almost half price. And if you book your tee times for early morning, you should escape the real heat and conditions for your round will be ideal. Then after your early morning round, its all about lounging by the pool enjoying the sun just like you would be doing on any other vacation. Anyways, even if you have had enough sun, there is a wonderful invention called air conditioning that will keep you cool in your luxurious room or suite.
Arizona, Nevada, and California to some extent have built there golf travel industry around the Winter months as they attract so many golfers from the more Northerly parts of the USA, and Canada. During this peak season golf courses, as well as hotels and resorts can demand a high price for services, and we (the desperate sun seekers) will gladly pay it for a slice of summer golf in the dead of Winter. Now lets compare WeKoPa Golf Club in Phoenix (#1 ranked public course in AZ), and a course which happens to be one of my favourites. Between the months of Oct-June the cost of a round of golf with powercart will be as high as $250, however that same course in June will only cost you $100 – That is a savings of $150 per person. Now if you plan on golfing 5 rounds during your vacation, that’s a savings of up to $750 on golf alone. When you combine equally reduced hotel rates, you have basically cut your vacation cost in half.
So if you want to enjoy a true, luxury desert golf vacation at a bargain price, try planning your next trip during the Spring/Summer months. Desert golf in Spring and Summer, I say why not?
