Ugggh.  Today I got a coupon in email from golfsmith for 15% off, and I decided I would check out some of the Snake Eyes and Lynx drivers and perhaps get one.

Last Sunday, I spent some time with the Callaway Tour Fit professional, and he tried to sell me on an FT-i squarehead driver.  Since my X-460 is only a few months old, and since I don’t buy current model stuff (I either get off Callaway preowned, or I get disco’d equipment)- I wasn’t interested in the FT-i, but today I decided I might get a square head Golfsmith model.

I found the Lynx LX2, which is a pretty sharp driver, and tried it out in the test bay, and it felt really good.  One thing I liked about it was that it had two weight ports in it, and it would let me try out some different weight configurations to try and help me with drawing the ball.  Also it had a pretty good Snake Eyes (Aldiva) NVS shaft too-- all for $150, (-15% coupon).

So I took the driver up to the store workshop and asked the tech for the weights and to go ahead and configure for a draw before I took it.

After the tech pretty much stripped the weight in there, we all found out the weight ports were not real, they were decorative.  This is so stupid!  Taylormade, which started this craze, also has some drivers with fake weight ports.  This should be outlawed, what is the point of having these fake weights built in?

Anyhow, it did save me from buying a driver which I shouldn’t have bought.  My backup plan was to get a wedge, but none of the name brands worked with the coupon, so I ended up with no new clubs.

I’ve noticed that on models from a number of manufacturers. It’s angered me, too.

They do that to sell more clubs.  You would have purchased that if you didnt take it to the tech guy.  But the tech guy should have known that before trying to adjust them.  Be weary of the people selling you clubs, especially what equipment would be appropriate for you.

You can get some lead tape for a couple of bucks at the golf shop and do that on any driver.  It is not as easy and you need to know where to put the wieght yourself.  But you are not allowed to change that on a club during a round anyway.  All settings must stay the same throughtout the round.  Most golf pros and salesmen can tell you where to put lead tape to influence ball flight.  It has been a practice for a long time, before the drivers with changable wieghts.  I dont really look at that as a great feature. especailly for a higher handicaper.
