Wednesday, December 5, 2007, Morristown, NJ; American Bryan Saltus clinched the Johnnie Walker Cambodian Open this past weekend, and immediately gave credit to his new GEL Putter for helping him win his first major tour title.
“Putting was my winning formula this week. I had a good start with three birdies and my confidence grew from there,” said a thrilled Saltus, who was playing with a GEL Sapphire Putter he put in his bag just before the tournament.
Saltus, a regular on the Asian Tour since 2004, sealed his victory with an impressive final round 67. He finished with a 17 under par 271, holding off Australia’s Adam Groom by three shots. With the help of his GEL Sapphire, he improved his putting average by nearly 2 putts per round including 30 one-putts.
“I congratulate Bryan and we are delighted that one of our GEL putters helped secure his victory,” said Alec Pettigrew, Managing Director of GEL Golf. “It is GEL’s maiden tour win and Bryan’s victory in Cambodia should go a long way to showcase the benefits of GEL’s technology to the world.”
This victory comes on the heels of last week’s impressive performance for GEL at the Hana Bank Vietnam Masters. Out of 13 players in the field using a GEL putter, three were rewarded with top-10 finishes including one from a European Tour regular.
Pettigrew continued, “Independent testing on our GEL putters, which have horizontal, precision-cut aluminium grooves, have proven that our technology produces greater grip on the ball, reducing skid and creating more topspin at the moment of impact. As Bryan found this week, the result is a truer roll that will help good putts find the bottom of the cup.”
In Cambodia, another American using a GEL putter, Anthony Kang earned his fourth top-ten finish in nine events, catapulting him up the Asian Order of Merit and earning him over US$200,000 in prize money. Australia’s David Gleeson, who made his Open Championship debut at Carnoustie in July using a GEL Ruby Putter, secured his Asian Tour card for 2008 with a 9th place finish.
Tests performed earlier this year by Quintic proved that grooved putter faces produce greater grip on the golf ball at the moment of impact, enhancing a putter’s ability to produce the desired topspin roll on the ball. Throughout testing, GEL putters outperformed a number of top competitive brands on the market such as Odyssey, Titleist and PING.
GEL’s product line incorporates decades of putter design with everything from traditional blade style putters to cutting-edge designs. The line features an aluminium putter face insert which is softer and more responsive than the stainless steel face inserts of other groove putters. Several models are available in ladies and left handed, and each GEL putter comes standard with a specially designed WINN grip. The MSRP for all GEL models in the United States is $165.
