Should Phil have gone for it?
Yes! There is no doubt he made an error in laying up. 1
Probably but only Phil knows why he could not make the shot. 1

No! Do you know how much those Callaway balls cost!?! Better to save it. 0

At this point in his career, Phil Mickelson does not need more money or a 2nd place finish.  Can he really say that he had a better chance of a “3” with a 70 yard pitch shot versus a go for broke attempt from a bad lie?  How many times a year in competition does Phil hole-out from 70 yards?  Five or six times versus about 1,800 attempts (25 x 4 x 18)?

It was not like David Toms laying up for a try at birdie and the win.  Phil had to hole-out for the win. If he had any chance, even a slim one, to get his ball near the green, he would have been wise to wait for Bubba and then go for broke.

I have never played golf professionally but I have watched a few tournements and stayed at a Holiday Inn Express so I feel I am qualified to render this opinion!

I’m also curious as to why he didn’t wait to see what Bubba had done on the green before making his decision. But I’m guessing that he worked out all the odds in his head before making his decision.

It’s a new Phil, though. Old Phil, the swashbuckler, would have tried to hole out from the bad lie.
