I’ve been seeing ads for drivers that come w/ interchangeable shafts, and they seem to be appearing in my local retailer recently. Is this a Good Thing? I suppose it is for the manufacturer(s); as far as regular golfers go I’m unconvinced.

The one package I’ve seen consists of a head and two shafts: a high-launch and low-launch version. There are a variety of lofts available. I saw no variations of head weight, length, or grip size.

There’s a 15-minute mp3 of Tom Wishon discussing this here.

I can’t even wrap my head around the question if this is a good deal or not.

Take the Callaway FT-i.  Pay $500 for the club with shaft.
or pay $400 for the head, and $150 for the shaft.
then buy additional shafts at $150 or more.

Maybe if you are going to use a couple different shafts, this might make sense.

Lets say you have a high lanuch and low launch shaft, or a couple different flexes- and then you buy a new i-Mix head when it comes out in a year or two—then it might make a lot of sense.

For me, it is just too much money.  I have a $150 Callaway Big Bertha 454, and a $199 Callaway x-460, with two angles, one weighted (with tape) for draw, and with a shaft for high launch and one for low launch.  But this is 3 years of drivers for me.  And instead of trading next time, I will get a another driver and just switch between them.

For me, it probably works better psychologically to have 2,3, or 4 drivers to switch between instead of trying to find some sweet combination of perfection with the i-Mix system.

I don’t see what the point is. Martin is right. You can buy a couple of drivers for the same price—especially on remainders or closeout.

I saw an ad for a set from Taylormade featuring a driver head, various head weights, and three shafts, yielding about 1000 possible permutations, all for $999.95.  I’m afraid that if I had a grand burning a hole in my pocket, such a set would be way down the list.
