There are witnesses.

The odds of hitting a hole in one is reported variously as one in 20,000 to one in 33,000. But the odds of hitting five in a week shouldn’t be any higher, since each is an independent event. That he hit a hole in one on Monday doesn’t have any effect on whether he hits one on Tuesday.

Still, it’s pretty amazing.

Det Ch Insp Graham McMillan, who is leading the investigation, said greenkeepers had been preparing the Carnoustie courses when one of them saw what appeared to be a body on fire and called the police.

“On their arrival they found a body lying by the 11th tee with fire damage. It was smouldering at that time,” he said.

“Thereafter it was treated as a suspicious incident. The area was cordoned off and a tent was erected to protect the body.”

Mr McMillan added that a forensic investigation was being carried out within the tented area and the body would be taken to the police mortuary at Dundee on Wednesday afternoon.
