Michigan is a golf-mad state, with more than 800 public golf courses; more per capita than any other in the United States. This section is for reviews of Michigan courses, as well as Michigan golf news and events.
Golf Banned In Park
It’s a measure of how golf obsessed Michiganders are that this sign is even necesary.
Michigan Tournament To Help Military Survivors
From The Detroit News:
The West Michigan Fallen Heroes Golf Tournament to benefit families of soldiers killed in Iraq is June 8 at Grand Haven Golf Club.
The outing is the idea of Captain Dan Rooney, an F-16 pilot in the Air National Guard who is also the PGA professional and owner of Grand Haven Golf Club. Rooney has served two tours of duty in Iraq. It was during his return home from the second in 2005 that he came up with the concept.
“I was frustrated when I came back,” Rooney said. “I said, ‘What can I do to help the war cause?’ ”
The West Michigan Fallen Heroes golf event was born. The goal is to raise $25,000 this year.
“We’ll focus on western Michigan families,” Rooney said. “The money will go directly to help pay for the education of children whose parents have been killed in Iraq. We can’t bring their parents back but we can help them financially for their college education.”
For information on the four-person scramble event, call Grand Haven Golf Club at (616) 842-4040. The entry fee is $150.
It’s a good cause. God bless ‘em
Buick Open Organizers Can Rest Easier
Organizers of Michigan’s only PGA Tournament can rest easier: Tiger has said that he intends to play.
The tournament’s defending champion said in a satellite conference that he would show up to play at the Warwick Hills club in Grand Blanc, barring any complications from his wife’s pregnancy. Elin Woods is due to deliver the couple’s first child in July. The Buick Open is at the end of June.
”
I know everyone thinks the tournament is kind of up in the air for me, but I intend on playing the tournament,” Woods said. “We’re very excited about our impending family extension here shortly, but I intend to be there, intend to play, intend on defending.”
Tournament organizers no doubt were rubbing their hands in naked glee. Tiger’s presence can make or break a tournament.
Brighton, Michigan Golf Course On The Auction Block
The ill-starred Huntmore golf club is about to change owners—again. This time, it’s on the auction block.
The Huntmore started life as the upscale “Golf Club of Michigan” back in 2000, and was much hyped. But its out-of-the-way location, and unfriendly design (it’s got a slope of 142) have not made it popular. I’m not sure whether it’s actually open at this point.
Anatomy of A Birdie Hole
Marywood is a great public golf course (formerly a private course) in Battle Creek Michigan. Here’s an analysis of how to play the tenth for a birdie.
