Augusta National and the Masters Tournament are Bobby Jones' second enduring legacy to golf. The course and club were founded in 1931, after Jones retired from competitive golf. The tournament originally was called the Augusta National Invitation Tournament, because Jones didn't like the sound of "The Masters." However, the name changed in 1939. Horton Smith won the first Masters, but it was Gene Sarazen in the second who put the tournament on the map with his double eagle on the 15th -- the "shot heard round the world." 2008 Masters Thoughts

A few random thoughts:

  • It wasn’t a great Masters. In fact, I thought the final day rather dull. Weather conditions effectively prevented a charge; everyone was simply holding on. Not exactly fun to watch.
  • Immelman won the tournament on the first two days. He shot 68-68-69-75.
  • That’s also where Tiger lost it. As good as he is, in a major he simply seems incapable of coming from behind to win.
  • I predicted back in March that Tiger would lose the Masters, ending any talk of a Grand Slam. It was more hope than prediction, but it came true. Now we can concentrate on golf, instead of the deification of the Tiger God.
  • I wonder how long the golf media is going to beat the Gary Player - Trevor Immelman horse. It’s dead already.
  • Last October, I had Immelman on my short list of best players not to win a major. I guess I’ll have to edit that post.
  • Winning the single year Grand Slam is simply a fantasy. It will never be done—especially with the Modern Slam.
  • Tiger has a big bald spot. I noticed it when he took off his hat. He’s headed for Jim Furyk territory.
  • Brandt Snedeker is going to be a major star. The pressure just got to him today. Is he the young challenger to Tiger that everyone’s looking for. He’s certainly the anti-Tiger, smiling his way through the event and looking like he actually enjoys golf.
  • It was nice to see Brandt offer congratulations to Trevor as they walked up the final fairway.
  • Tiger is now 1 for his last 6 in the Masters
  • Does the Chairman of Augusta get coaching in southern drawl? If Bill Gates ever became chairman, would he also develop a drawl?”
  • It was snowing here in Ann Arbor today. Somehow that made Augusta seem even more beautiful

Dave Loggins “Augusta” Video

Here’s a video to Dave Loggins “Augusta”, the song whose instrumental version permeates the broadcasts of The Masters. Lyrics are below:

Well, it’s springtime in the valley on Magnolia Lane
It’s the Augusta National and the master of the game
Who’ll wear that green coat on Sunday afternoon?
Who’ll walk the 18th fairway singing this tune?
Augusta, your dogwoods and pines
They play on my mind like a song
Augusta, it’s you that I love
And it’s you that I’ll miss when I’m gone.
It’s Watson, Byron Nelson, Demaret, Player and Snead
It’s Amen Corner and it’s Hogan’s perfect swing
It’s Sarazen’s double eagle at the 15 in ‘35
And the spirit of Clifford Roberts that keeps it alive
Augusta, your dogwoods and pines
They play on my mind like a song
Augusta, it’s you that I love
And it’s you that I miss when I’m gone.
It’s the legions of Arnie’s Army and the Golden Bear’s throngs
And the wooden-shafted legend of Bobby Jones.

Crenshaw On The Tee

The AT&T webcast from the Masters has an absolutely gorgeous view of the Par 5 13th at Augusta. Here’s Ben Crenshaw on the tee. I love the way the flowers frame the lower portion of the image.

GolfBlogger’s Picks For The Masters

Who my brain tells me will win: Tiger Woods

Who I really would like to see win: Vijay Singh

Golfers I’m rooting for:

Gary Player: To make the cut in his 51st masters

Fred Couples: To finish in the top 10.

Zach Johnson: To prove that his victory wasn’t a fluke. A Top 15 would be great.

The amateurs: To scare the pros on the first day.
