Top Ten Golfers With One Major

In honor of the passing of George Archer, Sports Illustrated has created a list of the top ten golfers with one major.

Their list: Lanny Wadkins, Tom Kite, Davis Love III, Fred Couples, Corey Pavin, Hal Sutton, Craig Stadler, Ian Woosnam, Paul Azinger, and Mark Calcavecchia.

They also mention Archer, David Toms, Steve Elkington, Justin Leonard and Jim Furyk.

There are, of course, others who won only one major, but many of those were flashes in the pan, such as Jack Fleck, but without a string of other victories, they can’t be considered.

Anyone want to add others to consideration?

Duval Makes The Cut

With all the excitement over the President’s Cup this last weekend, one story may have escaped your notice: David Duvall made the cut in this last weekend’s Texas Open. He put together rounds of 69, 68, 70 and 74 for a one over par 281. That was good enough to tie for 60th.

It would be good to see him return to his former form.

Wie May Ask For Appearance Fees

The San Jose Mercury News is reporting that when Michelle Wie turns pro, she may use a loophole in tour rules to collect appearance fees. The William Morris group—her agent—apparently has been asking tournaments what they would pay to have her show up. Speculation is that she could collect as much as $50 thousand an appearance.

While she would not be able to take appearance fees from LPGA events, she is not forbidden from collecting them on other tours.

Wie To Go Pro

Sources inside the Wie camp apparently are telling reporters that Michelle Wie will go pro just prior to the Samsung World Championship on October 13. Wie’s 16th birthday is October 11.

With her endorsements, she apparently would immediately become the highest paid female golfer in the world, which is certain to make her unpopular on the tour.

A deal with Nike is rumored to be worth $4 - $5 million, while one from an Asian electronics company could be worth $3 million.

Annika Sorenstam apparently makes about $7 million in annual endorsements.

Wow.

On the one hand, I wonder if she’s worth all of that. After all, its not like she’s won the US Open or anything.

But then I think that she’s wise to get the money while she can. Opportunity doesn’t come knocking twice.

And if she manages to win on the LPGA Tour, so much the better.

Perhaps she will create a Tiger effect for the LPGA. PGA Tour purses and endorsements have skyrocketed since Tiger hit the scene. It would be nice if Wie does the same thing for women’s golf.
