WVU Has Last Laugh On Big East
This is far afield from the usual golf talk, but as a WVU alum (twice), I am really enjoying the thought of the Mountaineers’ jump to the Big 12(10). Here’s a great article from Pittsburgh’s CBS affiliate.
I honestly think WVU is going to get its butt kicked the first couple of years in football in the Big 12. The basketball should be more successful. Bob Huggins’ team is very competitive in the deadly Big East basketball field, and should do at least as well in the Big 12.
Go ‘eers!

Congratulations To My Mountaineers!
Congratulations to my West Virginia Mountaineers for their crushing 70-36 victory over the ACC champion Clemson. West Virginia now has three BCS bowl victories.( For the record, that’s more than the entire ACC, including the two teams they enticed from the Big East).
WVU’s 70 point output is a BCS and Bowl record. Geno Smith’s six touchdowns also are a record. With this win, WVU is just one of three teams to have one each of the top three championship bowl games (not including the National Title game).
Big 12 here we come.

WVU Marching Band Tribute To The Armed Services
I’m biased, of course, but I think this WVU Marching Band (The Pride of West Virginia) performance is one of the best I’ve seen.

This Week’s Maryland Uniforms

As a Maryland native, I’m interested in what my home state’s flagship university is up to. The photo above is this week’s football uniform—one of 32 different combinations provided by UnderArmour. I don’t like it as much as the opening night’s flag uniforms.

I Like The Maryland Uniforms
Nothing to do with golf, but I actually like the controversial new Maryland uniforms. They’re a take on the state flag, which in turn is a take on the coat of arms of George Calvert, Lord Baltimore. Here’s the flag:

As a native Marylander, I’ve always liked that flag.
Update: Here’s the apparent story behind the uniforms:
Nike founder Phil Knight an Oregon grad has for some years funded that University’s uniforms, which have gained wide recognition for their flashy appearance. Not to be outdone, rival UnderArmour’s founders, Kevin Plank and Jordan Lindgren decided to do a similar thing for their own alma mater—the University of Maryland, where both were football players. The University of Maryland, Texas Tech and Auburn are considered UnderArmour’s flagship athletic programs.

Jim Tressel Resigns
GolfBlogger World Headquarters is located in Ann Arbor, Michigan, so Big 10 news is big here: Jim Tressel has resigned.
Looks like there was more there than a tattoo parlor scandal. I think that, given his successes, he would have survived if that’s all there was.
Brady Hoke is looking like one lucky guy right now.
The knock on Lloyd Carr was always that he couldn’t beat Tressel. But if there’s a big recruiting/player scandal brewing, it maybe that he just couldn’t win honestly against a guy who was cheating. We’ll know more in the very near future.
