As Nike expanded into virtually every field of athletic endeavor, it was only natural that they also get into golf. And when Tiger Woods announced his presence to the world in a Nike ad in 1996, the company was on its way in the golf business.
Nike CPR 3 Hybrid
The hybrid mania continues as Nike introduces its CPR 3. The original CPR club was Golf Digest’s Hybrid of the Year, and Nike continues to upgrade the brand.
The new CPR 3 has a “scoop back design”, which is supposed to move the center of gravity down and back, helping players get the ball airborne. This is the second club I’ve seen recently with this design.
If you’re not on the PGA Tour, you really should think seriously about replacing your long irons with hybrids. I replaced mine last year with the TaylorMade Rescue Dual last summer and saw an immediate improvement in my scores.
Nike Slingshot Tour Irons
Nike’s Slingshot Irons roused a lot of critical acclaim when they were released in 2004. The sling backs moved a great deal of weight back from the face, making them very easy to hit.
But the knock against them was that they were too unconventional looking. Better players just didn’t like the way they looked at address. I’m one of those who like a good clean look at address. Fat clubheads are a real turn-off for me.
So for its Slingshot Tour clubs, Nike got some input from their Tour players and modified the look. The slingshot back no longer is visible at address, and the offset is less. However, the club still achieves what Nike calls “Air CG” (interesting how everything is still “Air” with them—years after Air Jordan has retired), through the lightweight Custom Carpenter 455 face.
The Slingback achieves its effect by strategically moving the weight around. On the longer irons, the weights is concentrated low, back and in the heel. As the clubs get shorter, the weight moves forward, higher and toward the toe.

Nike Sasquatch Driver
I must not have been paying attention because, I just saw this Sasquatch Tour Driver at Golfsmith. I’d seen the ads, but hadn’t realized that it was out yet.
Its not too badly priced: the tour edition with an “exotic” shaft is just $349. Maybe we’ve seen the last of the $500 drivers.

Nike Therma Fit Half Zip Pullover
I’ve never had the chance to try any of Nike’s clubs (although the new Slingshots are tempting), but I can honestly say that their golf apparel is first rate. I especially have liked Nike’s colder weather gear. The sleeves are always roomy enough for a good swing; they’re warm, and breathable.
