Callaway Big Bertha 2007 Fairway Wood

Callaway adds to the most famous name in golf clubs with the 2007 edition of the Big Bertha Fairway Wood. Using technology borrowed from their driver designs, the Big Bertha Fairway has a larger volume, and a wider, more shallow face. This increases the moment of intertia—resistance to twisting—and offers help in getting the ball to the optimum trajectory. As with the drivers, a Consistent Alignment Sole helps to eliminate the tendency of the clubhead to rock at rest, thus starting shots more on-line. The club also has Callaway’s variable face technology, its shorter hosel and tru-bore shaft.

GigaGolf XP Fused Fairway Wood

Acer XP Fused

The Philosopher’s Stone of the alchemists of golf club design lies in the movement of weight down and away from the center. This both stabilizes the head through increasing the moment of inertia and increases the launch angle, helping the player to get the ball up for maximum distance.

One way that designers acheive this in metal woods is by reducing the weight of the shell. As this weight is reduced, discretionary weight is made available to place in more strategic locations—low and away from the center.

That’s the theory behind carbon composite heads like the Callaway models and the GigaGolf XP Fused line. By using a carbon composite head, the designers are able to move a greater proportion of the weight to the sole of the club. This makes it more forgiving—which is exactly what amateur golfers need.

The Gigagolf XP Fused Fairways are constructed from 17-4 stainless steel and carbon composite. If you’re a bargain shopper, at around $40 these just might be the right one s for you—especially because GigaGolf offers a 30 day playability guarantee.

TaylorMade Burner Steel Fairway Wood

The TaylorMade Burner Steel Fairway is the last offering in this spring’s trilogy of Burner clubs.

Due out in late April, the Burner Fairway is said to have the highest Moment of Inertia (resistance to twisting) of any fairway wood in golf (and 30% higher than TaylorMade’s R87 steel). It features TaylorMade’s “SuperFast Club Technology” to give an extremely light total weight combined with a light and long shaft to promote faster swing speed for added power. Faster ball speed also is encouraged by the club’s pull face construction. A shallow design allows TaylorMade to pull the center of gravity lower and farther back from the face.
