Nothing seems to inspire golfers as much as the quest for newer, better equipment. There's always a new set of irons, a new driver, or putter, fairway wood or hybrid to try and buy. We all seem to believe that if we just get the right club, our games will improve.

Chemical Hand Warmers Review

Chemical Handwarmers
Grade: C+

There are so many different brands of these things that I can't even begin to tell you what kind you might find in your neighborhood. My local ACE hardware even carries them. But they're all pretty much the same thing. When exposed to air, the packet begins to warm up. You slip them in your pocket and keep your hands on them in between shots.

But I don't really like them. I find that none of the brands that I have used heat evenly throughout their usage period (usually several hours). Sometimes I'll wrap my hands around them and feel nothing. At others, they'll feel like they're burning a hole in my pants pockets.

I like the idea though. But I'm still looking for a brand that actually works.

F2 Series Wedges

I got this ad in my email the other day. The manufacturer claims that "the face has been moved forward and the hosel back enabling the ball to strike and leave the clubface before grass or sand can grab the hosel and twist the clubface."

It's an interesting thought. Kind of the reverse of an offset club, where the face is moved back to allow you extra time to square it.

BluScoop Putter

Zax Golf's BlueScoop Putter is one of the new breed of "inertial" putters that shift the weight back from the face and in toward the centerline. This is supposed to keep the face from twisting during the stroke, promoting a straighter putt. This one looks a lot like the Hogan putter used by Jim Furyk, right down the blue color theme, although I suppose this is related to the aluminum materials. Still, I like the look. They should send me one for a review.

Golf Ball Dowsing Rod

Here's a spooky item for Halloween. The Golffinder is a golf ball dowsing rod. You use it like those old time diviners used a switch to find water in the ground for a well. Too weird.

Nike Tour Air Stand Bag Review

Nike Tour Air Golf Stand Bag

Nike Tour Air Golf Stand Bag

Grade: A

As I've said in previous posts, I think that walking is the only way to play golf.  Although I usually use a pull cart when playing 18 during the summer, I carry when playing a nine, or in colder weather (lugging the bag keeps me warm).

The Nike Air Tour is the third stand bag that I've owned. The others were a Ping and an Izzo. Of the three, I like the Nike the best.

First of all, the Nike has what I think is the best strap system out there -- the Izzo. And, keeping with the Nike tradition, the straps have been enhanced with a Nike "Air" system -- several air filled pads to make the shoulder straps softer. There's also a big air filled pad that rests against the small of the back.

The top of the bag is nicely padded and divided. All of my shafts are graphite, and I experienced no scratching on the paint this summer. The putter well at the top that fits my oversized Snake Eyes putter nicely.

The bag has a good variety of pockets and D rings for hooking things to. On the sides are two pockets for bottles, with mesh bottoms to let the condensation drip out.

Finally, I like the stand system. Unlike the Ping, whose legs extend whenever you set the bag down, the Nike system has a little "foot" that sticks out and doesn't activate the legs until the bag leans forward. This makes it much easier to strap it into a hand cart, or onto the back of a power cart (heresy!).

Visiball Glasses Review

Grade: B- Teacher’s Comments: It can help, but you still have to know where your ball went. Every golfer has had the experience of watching a ball roll just off the fairway and then—upon arriving at the location—finding that it is nowhere in sight. Nestled amongst…

The Efficient Golfer Book Review

The Efficient Golfer by Robert Anthony Prichard Grade: D- Teacher’s Comments: The book actually isn’t bad, but a bizarre “licensing agreement” totally turned me off. Robert Pritchard has found a new angle with his book, The Efficient Golfer. And that’s a good thing, because what…
