Cleveland Hi-Bore Driver
CLEVELAND HiBore Driver w/ Graphite Shaft
The Cleveland Hi-Bore Driver uses an inverted crown geometry to lower the center of gravity, thus launching the ball higher and farther. The inverted crown is essentially a scoop that has been cut out of the back of the club, making it one of the stranger looking clubs on the market. The weight that would be on top of a more traditional looking driver is thus moved down behind the clubface.
Cleveland also says that this allows them to align the “center of gravity of projection” with the face’s hot spot. This, the company says, allows it to coordinate maximum energy transfer with optimal launch conditions.
I had a chance recently to try one of these, and it seems to work as advertised.
TaylorMade R7 460 Driver
TaylorMade’s latest addition to it’s highly successfuly—and widely imitated—series of adjustable weight metal woods is the R7 460. The R7 460 offers a massive head, which results in the highest moment of intertia of any TaylorMade driver. Two widely spaced weight ports allow a player to assign a draw or fade bias to the club.
The R7 460 also has TaylorMade’s RE*AX shaft, which is designed to avoid distortion throughout the swing.
There’s also a TP Version
Nike Ignite 2 450cc Driver
The Ignite 2 is Nike’s latest addition to its stable of clubs. This 450cc driver has a large, thin titanium face and is designed to reduce twisting on off center hits (the ubiquitious moment of intertia). It’s available in regular, stiff, x-stiff, senior and ladies flexes.
Callaway X460 Driver
Callaway’s new X460 driver is an all titanium driver (as opposed to its graphite/titanium heads) whose massive size allows Callaway engineers to move weight even further from the center , this increasing the moment of intertia (resistance to twisting). It’s new X-Sole design allows the club to rest on two points at address, reducing rocking and producing a more consistent alignment. And the variable face thickness face produces greater distance on off-center hits.
In addition to the regular, stiff and light shaft, the club also is available in a ladies’ model (good for Callaway!).
GigaGolf Acer 905 Ti
GigaGolf’s Acer 905 Ti is a 460 CC driver with a thin beta face technology. The club is designed with a deep profile and rounder face, which Giga says optimizes energy transfer to the ball. GigaGolf says that the coefficient of restitution (COR - trampoline effect) on this club equals the USGA’s limit.
Starting at just $88.50, this club is a real bargain for a titanium driver. As a clubmaker, I can’t make them that cheap.
Like all of Giga’s products, this club comes with GigaGolf’s playability guarantee.
