Ok. So he didn't win. But Ian Poulter's Austin Powers pants make for the best picture from the Open Championship.

Nick Faldo apparently has given into the dark side and is planning on using a belly putter at the Open Championship (that's the British Open, for the unenlightened among you). Story here.

This article from Sports Illustrated presents a fascinating theory: that Tiger Woods has already peaked.
Consider: Watson won his eighth major at age 34 and never won another. Seve Ballesteros won the last of five majors at age 31. Tiger is now 28. And neither Watson nor Ballesteros burned so brightly, so young.
Writing in his book, Johnny Miller said "He's an old 28." Miller should know. He flamed out after a spectacular run in the 1970s.
There may be a parallel here in other sports. A statistical study I saw last year said that NFL running backs are, almost without fail, done by age 30. ( I play a lot of fantasy football, so this was an important point). The exception: those who started football late, and those who took a year or more off in the middle of their career.
Of course, golfers don't take the physical punishment. But I would argue that they take a far greater mental beating. The "yips" that golfers get is a mental problem, not physical.
Most telling may be how far back Tiger has finished in the last several majors. He simply hasn't been a factor.
Which makes Jack Nicklaus all the more remarkable. In addition to his 18 major victories, he finished second 19 times.

It's one of the oldest debates in golf. Is it better to be long, or accurate.
I've always said accuracy was the key. If you can keep it in the fairway, you give yourself the best chance of scoring well on a hole.
But these statistics from the PGA Tour say otherwise. At the Western Open, the guys with the most accurate games didn't seem to do as well as the long ball hitters.
I can think of a couple of reasons for these statistics:
First, the long drivers also possess remarkable recovery skills. Being a few feet in the rough, or even under the trees is no real obstacle.
Second, being twenty yards longer off the tee means that you are hitting your shorter irons on the approach. The shorter irons will presumably get you closer to the hole for your putts.
I think about my own game here. I don't hit it long, so my second shot on par 4s often is a long iron or a wood. That's too much pressure on my long game and I often miss the green. Another twenty yards off the tee, and I would be hitting a seven or eight iron to the green, which would rapidly decrease my scores.
But I'm not going to gain twenty yards. So I'd better practice my short game. Wedge it close. One putt. Par.

I just finished playing one of the longest rounds of golf I've ever played at my club. You know you're going to be in for a long day when the guy they pair you with has Titleist forged blades, a TaylorMade R500 driver (with sky marks on the top of the club) and a Scotty Cameron Putter in his bag, and three dozen ProV1x balls in his cart's basket.
I think he used every one.
Keeping up the pace of play is one of the basic rules of etiquette on the golf course. The USGA asks players to: 1) keep up with the group in front 2) be ready to play as soon as it is your turn to play.3) play a provisional if you believe you may not be able to find your ball.
This guy could have played a provisional on every second shot.
Here some more from the USGA.
