Zurich Classic’s Electrifying Finish
Leading in the final round, Chris Couch begins to slip even as Fred Funk begins to make an amazing charge. Funk shot a 10 under 62 to put himself 18 under, and in a tie for second.
On 17, Couch hits out of a bunker, flies the green and lands in the opposite rough. A playoff looks imminent—perhaps even a three way playoff: Charles Howell also has put himself into position.
And then, on the 18th, Couch pushes his wedge into a trap—55 feet from the hole. A playoff is certain. Funk is shown on the practice tee, warming up.
Couch blasts out of the trap, and the ball makes a beeline for, and into, the hole. The crowd goes wild. Funk is shown wiping his clubs and putting them back in the bag. He doesn’t have to see to know what has happened.
What a finish! It goes up there in my Top Ten most electrifying finishes.
