World Number One Watch - HSBC Champions Final Round
The HSBC Champions ended in the wee hours last night (Eastern Standard Time), with Francesco Molinari taking home the trophy. Of more import, however, is that Lee Westwood’s second place means he retains his slot atop the World Golf Rankings. Here’s how the pretenders challenged the throne:
Lee Westwood: T2 at -18
Tiger Woods: T6 at -7
Martin Kaymer: T30 at -2
Phil Mickelson: T41 at +1
Not a good showing for Phil, and not much to show for Lefty after the Masters. I wonder how much that arthritis is really bothering him. Could it effectively be career ending?
Tiger was again quite ... ordinary.
I’m sure Kaymer was disappointed in his performance.

I think we Yankees better start liking the idea that we won’t have one of our countrymen at the top of this ranking. I just don’t think that anyone is going to top Westwood or Kuchar - except McDowell and McIllroy. And with Westwood staying out of the US, I wonder exactly how much of these four we will even see in the PGA this next season, I wonder if it will be the minimum to keep their cards.

Westwood opting out of US PGA, then Kaymer, and now McIllroy.
I think Phil and Tiger’s chances of getting some wins just went up.
