Will Pinehurst Be Fair?

June 13, 2005

I thik its interesting that at this year’s US Open, the course at Pinehurst seems to be a bigger story than the players. Or rather, the USGA’s setup is the bigger story.

The course, with its link to the late Payne Stewart was going to be a big story anyway. But given the relative disaster at Shinnecock last year, it seems as though the entire golf world is waiting to see if the USGA lays another egg.

There was hope among some that the strange spring would prevent the growth of the rough, but Pinehurst now says that it’s up to the USGA’s three-inch requirement. Still, the USGA principles in this BBC article say that Pinehurst will be a much different test than Shinnecock.
