Why Phil Won’t Win The Open Championship

July 18, 2006

Sports Illustrated’s Bob Casper says that Phil Mickelson won’t win the Open Championship.

Now there’s a stretch. At this stage, it’s easy to bet against the guy.

Casper says that the ghosts of giving away the US Open, combined with a style of play that he’s just not used to will prevent Phil from hoisting the Claret Jug.

However, I’m crossing my fingers. In spite of myself, I actually like Phil. I believe that the oft-derided “big goofy grin” is sincere ... I think that he has a lot of fun playing the game and isn’t afraid to show it.

That’s refreshing when compared to the stony faced visages of other players.

  • I’d like to see it be someone who plays predominantly on the European tour.  The US PGA tour gets too much attention and there are a lot of good players on the European tour.

  • I’m rooting for the amatuers as usual.
