Who Fired Whom?

July 21, 2011

Loyal reader Brian points out that Steve Williams’ site says that he was fired by Tiger:

Following the completion of the AT&T National I am no longer caddying for Tiger after he informed me that he needed to make a change. After 13 years of loyal service needless to say this came as a shock. Given the circumstances of the past 18 months working through Tiger’s scandal, a new coach and with it a major swing change and Tiger battling through injuries I am very disappointed to end our very successful partnership at this time. I have had the opportunity to work of late for Australian Adam Scott and will now caddy for him on a permanent basis. Having started my caddying career with Australian great Peter Thompson and working for Greg Norman in the 80’s I am excited about the future working for another Australian.

I’m still not sure I believe the party line—it would be very costly to Tiger to be fired by his own caddy, so the conspiracy theorist in me says he paid Williams off. But if its true that Eldrick fired Steve, he’s even more disconnected from reality than we thought. I can’t imagine another caddy being able to handle the media circus—and Tiger’s anger issues (remember him chewing out Williams on tv at the ‘09 Masters?) —and still do his job as well as Steve Williams.

  • A lot of people, mostly media types, on Twitter are saying that everyone would jump at the chance to caddy for Tiger. I can’t imagine anyone with a regular gig would leave that gig for Tiger given the issues you mentioned. Rule number 1: Better the devil you know.  Rule #2: Happiness in your job is worth more than what you’re paid. Rule #3: Don’t mix business and personal life. I thought it was a bad sign when Tiger attended Steve’s wedding. Loyalty is for your friends and family. A job is a job. I’d say Steve Williams is learning this.
