Charlevoix’s Maureen Whitehead Wins 11th Michigan Women’s Senior Amateur
ST. CLAIR – Maureen Whitehead of Charlevoix came to the 11th Michigan Women’s Senior Amateur presented by Global Golf Post at St. Clair Golf Club after battling a stomach ailment.
“So I came without any expectations because I wasn’t sure how I would play,” she said after turning back Sue Campbell of Kalamazoo 3 and 2 in the championship match Wednesday for her second Michigan Women’s Senior Amateur title (2005).
“I played pretty steady, made pars and some bogeys but didn’t make any double bogeys. Then I threw in a birdie, and that’s all it took.”
Campbell, a former two-time winner, beat Shelly Weiss of Southfield 3 and 2 to reach the final, and Whitehead knocked off another two-time champion, Joan Garety of Ada, 4 and 3.
Whitehead, 61 and a former Hillsdale area resident, said she won holes 5, 6 and 7 and had a 4-up lead through nine holes in the title match.
“Sue played tough and I just held the lead,” she said. “It feels good to win, especially when I didn’t know what to expect. I was a little surprised how well I played. It was fun. I had to beat some good golfers and I did it.”
Champions were also crowned in four other flights. See the results at gam.org.
