WGC Match Play Championship Round 2 Thoughts

Phil Mickelson got spanked by Ricky Fowler. This might be the beginning of great things for Fowler. I couldn’t believe that iron shot on the par five that finished off Phil.

I hate Ricky Fowler’s hats. They look like they’re two sizes too big for his head. The flat brim also looks ridiculous.

And speaking of fashion, if Ryan Moore is going to keep wearing those classic golf togs with the tie, he needs to ditch the baseball cap. It looks quite incongruous

In eleven tries, Lee Westwood has never gotten past the second round. This time, it was Nick Watney who closed him out. I see a storyline here with Westwood. He’s currently the world’s most consistent player—hence his #1 ranking—but doesn’t close the deal. I’ve just looked up Westwood’s record: One win in 2010—the St. Jude in a playoff. Two wins in 2009: The Portugal Masters and the Dubai World Championship. No wins in 2008. Two wins in 2007: The British Masters and the Valle Romano Open de Andalucia. Not what I would expect from a #1.

A last ditch effort by Martin Kaymer kept this from becoming the third straight year in which all four number one seeds were gone by the third round.

As bad as the Mickelson defeat looked, Ben Crane’s victory over Rory McIlroy was much, much worse, with the two seed McIlroy going down 8&7. That’s a complete a victory as you can have.

Sean Foley says Justin Rose is the most complete player he’s working with now. Wonder what Tiger has to say about that.

I wonder if Tiger is wishing he entered the Mayakoba instead of the WGC.

JB Holmes is making the most of his last-minute addition, taking out Villegas, and then Els.

The match I’m looking forward to on Friday is Martin Kaymer v Hunter Mahan. That may tell us something about the state of American golf vs European golf. Matt Kuchar vs Ricky Fowler looks good too.
