Top Flite Gamer V2
A three piece ball for under $20? You betcha.
The original Gamer got some rave reviews, and now Top Flite (Callaway) is back for another round with the Gamer V2. Among the promised improvements: a new cover material for better durability and short game play, a softer core and a redone mantle layer. About the only thing that hasn’t changed is the unique dimple-in-dimple system that supposed to maintain spin longer in flight, thus creating more lift.
I wonder, though, about golf manufacturers’ impulse to always “improve” things. I can think of several products over the past few years that were most definitely NOT improved with the upgrade.
When the snow finally gets off the ground, I’m going to give these a try.

I really think Top Flite has made some really good balls over the last few years. Have their sales improved since the ‘Rock Flite’ days?

For $20, I decided this would make a great “fall ball” when golf balls play hide-n-seek with you under the leaves, so I bought a dozen of last year’s model.
They played pretty well. Certainly not as soft or “spinny” as the TaylorMade TP Red/Black that I usually played, but I liked it and would not hesitate to use it if I ran out of the TM TPs.
One thing, though, that I decided could definitely be improved upon is the durability of the cover. It was pretty easy to scuff up, so if they improved on that, I’m all for it!
I will definitely give these “improved” ones a try sometime this year!

I love ‘em. I was hooked on Titleist NXT Tours for quite while. I read about the Gamer V2 and all the reports were raving. I can’t tell the ball from the NXT Tour in performance. In fact a week or two ago I thought I was playing an NXT that my wife found. I hit the drive, hit the second, hit the green with a nice check and stop. I thought ‘man, I love that ball.’ I went up to mark it and picked it up and it was one my own Gamers! That convinced me right there….Gamers for good.
