Top Flite Freak Golf Ball

Top Flite Freak

One of Top Flite’s latest offerings is the “Freak,” a two piece ball that features Top Flite’s dimple-in-dimple innovation. Each of the dimples has tiny little ring inside it that supposed to increase the lift and allow the ball to hold its line. And, of course, it’s got the “high velcoity” core and “ionomer cover” that every other ball manufacturer brags about.

Top Flite is owned by Callaway these days, and the two companies are doing some interesting things with the traditional dimple. Callaway’s hex pattern and the Top Flite dimple in dimple are the most interesting things to happen to the dimple since—- well, the dimple.

Golf balls, of course, fly as far as they do because of the dimples. A smooth sphere has little lift, and significant wake turbulence that produces drag. The dimples reduce the wake turbulence, and thus the drag. Backspin on the ball, in combination with the dimples, creates lift by deforming the air around the ball, in much the same way as an airplane wing.

You can get the Freak at Golf Galaxy.

  • I picked up a dozen Freaks today at Golfsmith, and found that it is yet another ball with a non-standard 1-4 numbering scheme.  I don’t know why I get joy when I find these, the precepts with the 22, 33 or the Mojo with the “0”.  The Freak has the best numbers around though at 300, 310, 320, 330.

  • Numbers in the hundreds?

    Now THAT is very cool.

Maybe a company could produce balls with random numbers between 1 and 1,000. They could sell a lot of them to people trying to assemble a complete set.

  • I bought a dozen Freaks for a golf trip this spring as a joke. There were cheap, and I thought the name was funny. This year I’ve played the best golf of my life, and this ball hasn’t hurt me one bit.

They are long off the tee, have a nice, high ball flight, stop on the greens (though they don’t back up), and putt true. I’ve had one side of golf under par, two sides at par, and recently shot a career best, a 76 for 18 holes, using these balls. They are softer than the Top Flites (aka Top Rocks) of old, and feel similar to my previous standard, the Titleist DT. Plus, no one else in my group will play them, which keeps the confusion at a minimum.

Great ball at a great price.

  • I played in a tournament last week, were my friend didn’t show up, anyways its a best ball of foursome. and i get two tee off twice in his case i use nike one black witch i’ve been using for about 2 years, and on my second tee shot i used the freak, i hit the freak longer and straighter than the nike one, i just can’t believe it.

  • Played the Freak this past saturday. I’m 59 years old with a 90 mph driver club-head speed and a 20 handcap.
They didn’t go any farther for me but they went dead straight all day. I dropped 10 strokes and broke 80 for the first time in 7 years. It’s a very hard ball and no fun around the green or with short-irons….. but for high handicappers it’s dead straight because of the dimple design. Easy to drop some strokes for wild hitters.
