Tiger On The Rooftop

August 25, 2006

image

It’s one of the craziest things I’ve seen: Tiger’s ball hit the pavement in front of the clubhouse and bounded onto the roof. Now he’s standing there and the entire tournament has come to a halt as people search the roof for his golf ball. It seems as though he’s actually contemplating hitting it from there if they find it—the roof, he has determined, is NOT out of bounds. (The ball is in the yellow circle above. The arrow indicates the direction that it travelled. After it leaves that bluish area, it passes over the white part of the roof, where it disappears from the camera)

More as the story unfolds.

He should just take a drop and get on with it. It’s not like this is a major. Of course, the question then will be WHERE to take the drop.

UPDATE

Now, from what I can gather, it turns out that the ball ended up in the parking lot, where it was picked up by a spectator. Because the ball was moved by an outside agency, he gets a free drop.

Napoleon once said that it’s better to be lucky than good. It may be true in golf, too.

  • Whatever happened to the five minute rule to look for the ball

  • My guess is that Tiger would argue that he was waiting for a ruling, not looking for the ball.

  • I’m glad I missed this.  I left the tournament about 15 to 20 minutes before this took place.  If I had been there when this little circus act started, I wouldn’t have been able to get through to the crowds to leave and I would have been real late getting home.  And I don’t know why people say it’s hard to see Tiger at these tournamnets.  I saw him plain as day three times without even trying to.  Now, the man of the people, Phil Mickelson, I didn’t see once in the four days I was there.
