TAYLORMADE Burner Driver

TAYLORMADE Burner Driver

TaylorMade continues its inexorable march of new products with their new Burner Driver. The 2009 version uses “Dual Crown Technology” to lower the center of gravity, resulting in higher launches (more carry, more distance). High Moment of Intertia and TaylorMade’s ubiquitous inverted cone technology offer better distance and accuracy on off-center hits. And with a redesign of the shaft, they promise great distance on every shot.

Its interesting to me how the golf manufacturers have adopted the auto makers’ marketing strategy: new models every year; sometimes with minor changes, others with complete redesigns.

  • How much farther can these companies “lower the center of gravity” or “better distance” or “higher accuracy” anyway?  Every year we hear the same things like this.  Are they improving these specs by .0000001% each time or something?

  • I’ve wondered that myself. It sounds an awful lot to me like those long distance phone service ads from a few years ago. They all promised to save 20%, but never told us what was the baseline.

  • It certainly sounds good doesn’t it?  At some point I am wondering if the top of the crown will be a mere piece of stretched cellophane.

As for me, I am now eager to see the closeout prices for the 2009 Burner.  I carry 2 drivers now, a 9-deg X-460, and a 9.5-deg Burner Draw, and I am wanting to try a driver with a higher head angle.  I may get a Cleveland on closeout, but I could probably just wait for these new Burners to get to $150-200 also.  Should only be a few months.

  • I often wondered if it’ll get to the cellophane- stage too.

I suspect there’ll be a point where most of the upper portion of the driver will be a skeletal structure designed to support the club-face.
