Ping G5 Irons
Ping sort of seems to be the forgotten man among the major manufacturers these days. I don’t see their advertisements on televison. I can’t tell you who’s on their pro staff. They aren’t making the golf news sites and blogs with their equipment. I don’t know anyone who has their newer clubs (although plenty are still playing with 10-year-old models). And they certainly are not being pushed in any of the local pro shops.
It could be just a local thing—maybe they get more traction in other areas—but I get the feeling that they’re kind of sliding backwards.
Still, they continue to focus on producing very player-friendly clubs, such as the new G5 irons, which made Golf Digest’s 2006 Hot List.
The G5s are a refinement of last year’s G2 series, with a wider sole and more perimeter weighting. The weight port on the back of the clubs is larger, too, reducing vibrations and stabilizing the face.
The wider sole was created through Ping’s redesign of the undercut cavity. The pull direction is parallel to the ground, rather than perpendicular to the face. This lets Ping move more mass to the the back of the clubhead.
They’re still not particularly attractive, with their tumbled finish and blunt lines. But with Ping, its all about playability.

Ping G5 irons were the best selling iron for most of 2006. The US open was just won with Pings and Lorna Ocha just signed with Ping.
Where have you been?

The post was written prior to the Duck’s victory at Oakmont and prior to Ochoa’s signing. Ping was a LOT slow on the uptake with Ochoa, considering that she’d been playing their clubs for a decade. the more media astute companies sign promising players early.
And the fact remains that they’re not being pushed by our local shops and that I see only the older clubs in people’s bags ... although this last week, I played with a guy who had a Ping driver. When I’ve tried to test drive some Ping clubs at local pro shops, I keep getting pushed to other brands. But as I said before, it could be a regional thing.
In spite of their good design, I still think that they’re the forgotten brand. TaylorMade, Titleist, NikeCallaway, and Cobra get far more press.

Ping are the only guys that can give you a 5 degree lie. And for a disabled golfer like me thats a big deal. I need 5 degrees. Made such a difference to my game. Thank you ping!!

As a Ping loyalist, and weekend golfer, I’ve played Eye 2’s, i3’s, and now G5’s. This road has given me a chance to see subtle imrpovements with each progression. The lead sole on the G5’s is really noticable and provides for deeper divots and more action. Forgiving irons with a soft sweet spot that is very true.
