Pinemeadow Excel Lightning Driver
Pinemeadow Excel Lightning Driver
In these recessionary times, off-brand clubs are looking better and better. Unlike the cheap knockoffs you see in bargain stores and at disreputable golf shows, the Pinemeadow clubs I’ve bought are well constructed from quality materials. As a some-time clubmaker, I’ve been impressed with the little details, like the close fitting, turned ferrules, and perfectly aligned grips.
The difference in the price is not in materials or workmanship, but that they are design followers, not leaders. What Pinemeadow offers are last year’s designs.
But the prices! This square driver is stylistically out of date, but at $99, you can afford to play last year’s design. Constructed of 6/4 titanium, the square head is supposed to provide the maximum possible MOI, straightening out your drives. The big sweet spot also will maximize distance. That’s why Nike, Callaway and others were touting the square design. If square worked a year and a half ago at $500, it works this season at $99.

When I first got into golf about 1 1/2 years ago, the Pinemeadow clubs were what I went with. In fact, I probably found them through you.
Anyway, although I’ve bought clubs for my main set (building my backup set!), you are definitely right about the value of them and the company is first rate! If anyone is looking for an inexpensive way to get a good set of “new” clubs, you can’t go wrong with Pinemeadow. (Man! I sound like an advertisement.

You can also go with second hand, usually light wear, on Callawaypreowned.com and get the Callaway models for not much more than this. My FT-i squarehead driver I only paid $129 and that was on Black Friday 2008 on the Callaway site.
The big sweet spot does not maximize distance. The forgiveness is incredible on my FT-i, but even though it has the best shaft of any of my drivers, my distance is just not that great with the FT-i. When I can hit it correctly, my Taylormade Burner draw is the longest club I have, and my Callaway X-460 is next with the Callaway Diablo and FT-i at the back of the pack. However, since I am walking 90% of my rounds now, once my back gets tired, if I try and drive with anything other than the FT-i the results may be troublesome. The FT-i is 90% straight down the middle for me.
