PGA Tour Will Not Have Drug Testing

Amid the firestorm of controversy over Jose Canseco’s accusations of steroid use in baseball, PGA Commissioner Tim Finchem says there is no plan to test PGA Tour players.

PGA Tour Commissioner Tim Finchem said he is comfortable with the tour’s 13-year-old policy that makes no mention of performance-enhancing drugs. Not only has there been no evidence that steroids are an issue in golf, he said there has been nothing to indicate that the tour should waste time or money looking for such a drug.

I used to think that there was no use for ‘roids in golf, but after hearing and reading more about them, I’m not so sure. Most people think that the drugs could only be used to create muscle mass—which would most likely NOT be useful in golf. But I’m also reading that the steroids can be used to help stave off muscle fatigue, and recover more quickly from muscle injury.

And that WOULD be useful in golf. If you could take a steroid that would ensure you had fresh legs on Sunday, then there would be a competitive advantage. Of if you were taking one that would redue the nagging little muscle pulls that tour players rack up by the end of a long season, there would be a competitive advantage.

I’m going to have to do some more reading on steroids.
