PGA Tour Money List Gets A One Year Reprieve

September 12, 2012

The PGA Tour is in a state of transition, and it’s clear that the suits at Ponte Vedra have yet to get all the wrinkles ironed out. The latest involves the money list.

As the Tour makes its shift to a fall start next season, Tour cards originally were to be dispensed on the basis of FedEx Cup points. The Top 125 would automatically get their Tour cards, while the following 75, plus the top 75 from the Web.Com Tour would engage in a three tournament playoff for the remaining 50 spots. Q-School would be reduced to allocating Web.Com Tour cards.

But someone apparently realized that because a new season now starts in the fall of 2013, players would only have from January 2013 to August 2013 to secure their spots. In seasons past, players still outside the cut in August could pad their earnings in the relatively minor fall events.

So the Tour now has decided to count both the top 125 in FedEx Cup points AND the top 125 on the money list for next year. Most of those lists will overlap, but especially at the bottom end, there should be some difference. For example, Brendan Steele, Jhonattan Vegas and Retief Goosen this year all were in the top 125 on the money list, but not in FedEx Cup points.

I honestly don’t think this will be the last of the tweaks before the next season begins.
