PGA Tour Cancels First Event In 13 Years
Weather forced the cancellation of this past weekend’s Viking Classic—the first time that has happened on the PGA Tour in thirteen years. Course conditions simply were unplayable. The event will neither be extended nor made up.
The 1996 Pebble Beach was the last to be canceled because of conditions. The Shell Houston Open, canceled for rain in 1991, eventually was replayed.
Tournament director Randy Watkins: “I told them this was closer to a FEMA disaster site than a golf course. Somebody asked if you could play somewhere else. I don’t think you could play golf within 150 miles of here.”
In this day when economic conditions have so often dictated the viability of tournaments, it’s perhaps instructive to be reminded that there are forces out there greater than our cash flow balance sheets.
