Palmer’s Streak Ends

February 15, 2005

Just as amazing as Cal Ripken’s streak of 2,632 consecutive games is Arnold Palmer’s streak of having played in a PGA Tour event every year for 51 years. Palmer, now 75, played in his first tour event in 1953.

But now, he is effectively hanging it up by bowing out of his own Bay Hill Invitational.

I, for one, wish he would play. I really don’t care what he shoots. And heck, he can’t do any worse than David Duval, can he?

Palmer’s presence is about more than his score. He is the game’s ambassador, a smiling presence that fan love to see.

My one golf wish at this point is that I get to meet Mr. Palmer before he retires for good.
