Ochoa Takes Top Spot

April 26, 2007

Rising star Lorena Ochoa has seized the top spot from Anika Sorenstam on the Rolex women’s world golf rankings. Using the ranking’s two-year rolling calendar, Ochoa has earned 642.19 total points in 50 events for an average of 12.84, while Sorenstam has 546.22 points in 43 events for an average of 12.70.

While congratulations to Ochoa are in order, the change is nonetheless a bit deceptive. Sorenstam has played hardly at all this year due to a back injury. It seems, however, that the change may be permanent, for Sorenstam has apparently decided to play less to focus on majors (has she been talking to her friend Tiger?)

“I will play less, prepare more and really go for the big competitions,” Sorenstam told Swedish broadcaster SVT last week.

Rolex can’t be happy with that decision. They would get so much more publicity with Ochoa and Sorenstam battling it out for position than they will for Karrie Webb, Morgan Pressel and Cristie Kerr, the others occupying the top five.
