Nike Invests Big In Athletes

September 21, 2006

Bloomberg has an article with some very interesting data on Nike’s sponsorship of athletes:

  • Nike sponsors 14 of the world’s 25 highest-paid athletes
  • Nike’s best selling shoes still are Jordans.
  •   Nike estimates it will pay athletes and sports teams $476.5 million in the fiscal year ending in May, 74 percent more than it did four years earlier.
  • Nike pays Tiger Woods $40 million a year.
  • The Nike Golf division generates $500 million a year in revenues, accounting for 3% of Nike’s business.

  • I know I’m being irrational about this, but the more money Nike throws at golf the more it irritates me, and makes it less likely I’d buy their product(s).
