Mickelson Treats Kids To Back To School Supplies

August 23, 2009

Kudos to Phil and Amy Mickelson, and the Mickelson Foundation for sponsoring “Start Smart”, a program that over the past five years has outfitted 6,500 students with back-to-school supplies at a cost of $1.3 million.

The San Diego Tribune reports that on Saturday, the Mickelsons bused 1,500 needy students to a San Diego area Wal-Mart and allowed each to shop for $200 in supplies.

“My wife, Amy, and I are real big on education and hope these kids, once they have new outfits and school supplies, are excited about the new school season,” Mickelson said. “The thank-yous and appreciation after they pick out some cool new clothes have been the most rewarding.”

Phil was at the Wal-Mart, greeting kids, but wife Amy was—as every golf fan knows—home battling breast cancer. Phil said that:

“Amy’s been doing ok. She has good days, she has bad days. It’s day to day. She wishes she could have been here.”

As a teacher, I really appreciate Phil’s efforts on behalf of education.
