Michigan’s Double JJ Ranch and Golf Resort Closes

September 9, 2008

More sad news.

Michigan’s Double JJ Ranch and Golf Resort has closed.

I always intended to take the family there.

Originally known as the Jack and Jill Ranch, the Double JJ has been in operation for 71 years. Located north of Muskegon, it featured a dude ranch, championship golf course, hotel and conference center, horse trails, a friday night rodeo and a $12 million indoor waterpark.

The owners hope that investors will buy the property and reopen.

  • I spent a week at the Jack & Jill Ranch in 1953. It was the best vacation I have ever had. The $96 fee for the week included room and all meals (and they were plentiful and delicious), instructions in horseback riding, archery, swimming, tennis; and there was entertainment provided every night in their Lodge rec room by the wonderful staff. It would take me an hour to tell you about all the fun things there were to do. Even back then it was hard to see how they could do all they did for the money. We went as a group, but except for my best friend who was with me and two other guys in the same cabin, we didn’t see a whole lot of the rest of our group. We and they were all having such fun. They had a Sadie Hawkins Day Race where the guys had a ten minute head start and then took to the dance the girl that caught them. The guys had to fix a bouquet from wildflowers in the area. One of my roommates used a corn stalk decorated with flowers as his girl’s corsage. She bravely carried it in the Grand March at the dance that evening. The food was excellent and you got seconds and thirds if you wanted. After the meals we all sang songs that we learned while we were there. What a week. I’m 73 now and still remember that wonderful time.

  • Very sorry to hear about the closing.  I was there in 1970 when I was 20, my mother was there before she got married sometime in the 1940’s.  My girlfriend and I had a great time and met some fun people.  I even met my fiance’ there…but that relationship only lasted a year, we did not marry.
I was thinking about the place because I was doing a scrapbook page with the pictures I took back then, and wanted some additional information…my memory is not as good as it used to be.
