MaxFli Tour Fire Golfball

May 23, 2007

MaxFli’s latest offering is the Tour Fire, which it touts as being “Designed by John Daly for John Daly.”

MaxFli says that the ball offers tour caliber distance with its “SpeedCcore” and HPF 1000 Speedmantle. At the same time, the “lothane” cover is supposed to offer top spin and feel. In a bit of technological wizardry, the same SpeedCore that provides the distance also is supposed to contribute to the soft spin and feel.

The promotional material on their site doesn’t say explicitly, but it seems to be a three-piece ball: SpeedCore, Speedmantle and lothane cover.

You can get it at Golfsmith.com It’s under $30, so if it really doesn play like a Tour ball, it’s a steal.

  • Haven’t tried the Tour Fire yet, but would stay away from the regular Fire. I like the Noodle and thought a value 3-piece from Maxfli would be just the ticket. Well, it felt hard and light off the irons with limited spin. Not that I spin the ball much, but greens where I can check a Noodle didn’t bite at all with the Fire. They didn’t feel solid off the putter either. The Tour Fire needs to be leaps-and-bounds better or why not go with something like the NXT Tour which is cheaper.

  • Oh, I liked the regular Fire.  I played it most of the winter, and early spring before switching back to the HX Hot.  It didn’t fly as well as the HX Hot, but I thought it did putt well and the graphics really set the ball apart from others.

Now that we have a golfsmith and I can get logo overrun HX Hots for $2 cheaper than the Fire, I started playing the HX Hots.

I should say that I have been playing the Top Flite D2s quite a bit as well which is a fantastic ball for $14 for 15.  Everyone at the club is going nuts over the D2-Green (feel), but I am usually playing the D2-Red (distance).

  • Tell me more about those Top Flites ... no longer top rocks?

  • It seems that a whole slew of folks playing with these D2s all swore off Top Flites a long time ago and are very surprised they are back.  The D2-Green I have heard different people call a ProV1 killer in the feel is very much the same.  The Distance (red) ball I play a bit I almost would have sworn was a non-conforming ball the first time I played with it, but since I think the distance might be comparable, but perhaps a little shorter than the HX Hot.

It is not just my club either—the pro shop was late to the game in getting the balls just about two weeks ago, members were getting theirs from Golf Galaxy, Golfsmith, or one of the other retailers.  The discount golf place near my work are selling the stew out of the greens and just lowered the price from $16 to $14 for fifteen.

The D2 is for “Dimple in Dimple” which is what it says and Callaway claims that it has some aerodynamic benefit (although I wonder if they think Hex or Dimple in Dimple is a better design).  The (distance) balls hold up fairly well for a low cost ball, but don’t hold up as well as a Bridgestone e5, HX Hot, HX Blacks or Pro V1s.  I would say that they are more durable than a DT So/Lo though, and definately more so than a Noodle.

I do find it a little surprising that these balls have Top Flite on them, instead of being a replacement for the Big Bertha or Warbird lines on the Callaway side.  It might be that with all the comparison with the ProV1s, thet Callaway was trying to dig at Titleist by releasing such a ball under the Top Flite name instead of the Callaway name.
