MacGregor VIP Golf Balls

MACGREGOR VIP

MACGREGOR VIP

I wonder who’s making these.

MacGregor was acquired by GolfSmith earlier this year, so these MacGregor VIP balls have to be a product of the Golf superstore.

They’re expensive at $39 a dozen, so you have to assume that it’s a multi piece ball, but the literature doesn’t say. From the GolfSmith site:

The MacGregor VIP features a urethane cover that provides the ultimate in control-shot shaping, spin control, pin point distance control and stroke-saving short game control. All of this with no sacrifice in distance. The unique core design provides exceptional ball velocity combined with ideal high launch angle, low spin launch conditions for greater carry and distance. Finally, the high trajectory 330-dimple pattern provides a strong and penetrating trajectory in all wind conditions.

I think GolfSmith likely is making a mistake pricing these in the same range as the Pro V1, Bridgestone Tour models and so forth. I can’t imagine anyone with $39 burning a hole in their pocket choosing these instead of the Pro V. But if it was in the $20 range, they might gain some traction.

  • I agree completely.  The price point on these is way off.  Let’s see, Tour iX, Pro V1x, or MacGregor VIP.  Which one of these is not like the other

  • A pretty good all around ball. Average distance, but great spin and control around the green. If you can buy it at Golfsmith (or elsewhere) for $33/doz or less I think they’re a reasonable alternative to the pricier multi-layer tour balls like the Pro V-1, especially for mid-handicappers whose pockets aren’t all that deep (like me),  who want to put those 2 piece distance balls in the shag bag and move up to the next level, but still appreciate and benefit from the feel and control these offer. There are longer balls off the tee, but these work better for “scoring shots” inside 100 yds. than they do. I actually chipped two in for back-to-back birdies first time I used them. That was enough to sell me on them, again with the caveat that you can buy them for cheaply than the big name tour balls.

  • Mark, thanks for the MacGregor VIP ball review.

  • Just bought two dozen of these for $22 per dozen, I’m willing to try a three-piece, urethane-covered ball for that price.  Great feel putting at home on the bedroom carpet; we’ll see how they react on the course.
