I’m Glad I’m Not Corey Pavin

August 6, 2010

I’m glad I’m not Corey Pavin. The way Eldrick is playing right now, Pavin’s going to have to decide whether Woods gets one of the Captain’s Picks for the Ryder Cup. Tiger is ninth in the rankings, and only the top eight are automatic.

I personally wouldn’t blow one of my four picks on Tiger. But Pavin is in a damned-if-you-do; damned-if-you-don’t situation.

The best thing for all concerned would be for Tiger to take himself out of the running.

  • Good post and I’ve bookmarked it.

Couldn’t agree more with you and Tiger is in a similar damned-if-you-do damned-if-you-don’t situation.

He plays, they lose, he’s criticized.
He doesn’t play, they lose, he’s criticized.
He doesn’t play, they win, he gets it rubbed in is face.
He plays, they win, the press will come up with something!

Yeesh, glad i’m not Corey or Tiger.

  • At the risk of being branded a heretic, based on how well European golfers are doing this year, it’s a very good possibility the Europeans will take the Cup.

That said, perhaps Tiger should be offered the chance to play on the team. He’s still ninth ranked - more or less, so it’s not a pity-offer or an overt pandering to the press.  He could (and likely would) turn it down. But in my not-so-humble opinion, it should still be made, for the good of the game.

Who knows, maybe he’ll find it in himself to both step up and maybe mature a bit more.

  • If the guys ranked 10th, 11th, 12th and 13th are playing better than Tiger, then Corey doesn’t have a tough decision to make.  You go with the players who are currently playing well. What good does 14 major championships do you if you can’t hit a fairway or make a putt?  It’s really a very easy decision to make. Go with the players who are doing well and then in every press conference, you talk about how good they are every time someone asks about Tiger. If Tiger wanted on the team, he would make more of an effort.  Watching the highlights of the third round of Bridgestone, you can tell he’s given up and isn’t even trying. Not to mention that the worst thing the US team can have happen to them is for Tiger to be on the team in Europe with the European (British) press, and with Colin Montgomerie running his mouth, that would be all too much of a distraction for the whole team.
