Hurry ... Buy Those TaylorMade TP Red LDP Balls While They’re Still Hot
TaylorMade is withdrawing sales of its Taylormade TP Red LDP balls, having discovered that they exceed the USGA’s initial velocity limit. It turns out that the wrong core was put into the balls.
New, scaled back, balls will be released March 2. They’ll be marked with the line “Tournament Edition.”
In the meantime, you probably can find the “hot” balls still on the shelves.

The winner of the AT&T;Pebble Beach, Dustin Johnson, played TaylorMade TP Red LDP balls. I am sure if his version of this brand of ball was non-conforming:
a. There is nothing to be done about his win since all this information came out after the fact,
b. The violation was inadvertent and was essentially outside the player’s control or knowledge, and
c. Any advantage he may have gained was very slight, in as much as he already is one of the longest hitters on tour.
I believe Tom Watson had a somewhat similar situation years ago. Several weeks after winning the Masters, his sand wedge was checked and he was informed that because of wear & tear, it no longer conformed to USGA specifications. Nobody (other than Gary Player) ever said anything about his use of a non-conforming club prior to the discovery of the problem.

The ball was on the conforming list at the time, so it was legal for the tournament. They just won’t be legal in the future.

The nonconformance, found in a small batch made by mistake, only accounted for less than 2/10th of one percent of ALL TP Red LDP produced. Rather than taking the chance, TM asked that the entire line be removed from the conformance list. Rushing out and buy these balls achieve nothing.
