Hireko’s Acer XP 905 Pro Iron

Acer’s 905 XP Pro Irons are designed for low- to mid-handicappers who want reduced offset for workability and low ball spin. Cast from stainless steel, the clubs have a deep undercut cavity and a heel to toe notch. The strong perimeter weighting offers a high moment of inertia for forgivability. Meanwhile, Hireko says, the low center of gravity creates a higher launch angle and more solid feel at impact.
Starting at just $6.95 a club, the XP 905 Pros are a great bargain. And like all Hireko clubs, they come with a 60 day playability guarantee.

Are these Hireko and Acer clubs usually “inspired” by one of the major brands’ project lines? Is it kosher to include that info in these entries?
i.e. This looks like it might be a take off of the Callaway X series irons, or perhaps the TaylorMade RAC.

I think “inspired” by is exactly the right term. They’re not clones, but clearly are borrowing last year’s technology. For me, the term clone often implies a pure knock-off, manufactured from inferior materials and often designed to trick the unwary consumer.
GigaGolf, Hireko and PineMeadow all have products that I’ve used happily, and I wouldn’t put them in the knock-off category.
In business, the term seems to be “smart follower.” They produce original designs based on other people’s technology and research. Compaq, Gateway, Dell, et. al. do this in the computer industry ... although the best of these “followers” eventually do their own original research, just as the better golf component manufacturers have done.
Hireko, for example, offers the DynaCraft line, which has had original designs for a very long time. I was making clubs with Dynacraft components fifteen years ago, before they were bought by Hireko and liked them very much. (Interestingly, DynaCraft had the first hybrids I had ever seen with the Jackaroos). Other great component companies with original designs that I’ve used are GolfSmith and Golfworks.
And yes, I’m sure that these XP 905s are inspired by the Callaways.
