Hireko Acer Mantara Driver

March 22, 2007

This year, it’s all about geometry. Square drivers, hexagonal drivers, triangular drivers—and now, Hireko Golf’s Acer Mantara Driver: a driver shaped like a manta ray.

The purpose of all of this geometry is to move the weight to the perimeter of the clubhead. This increases the moment of inertia (resistance to twisting) for straighter, more accurate shots. Moving the weight low and back creates higher launch conditions.

The Mantara is a 460cc titanium driver head that comes in 10.5 and 12 degree lofts. It’s one degree closed, making it easier to close at impact than square or open faced drivers. The downside is that it may be slightly more difficult to “work” the ball.

I don’t need to work it. I need to stripe it down the middle.

You can get the Mantara for as little as $89, custom built to your specifications. The club comes with a 60 day satisfaction guarantee.

  • Well, as opposed to the BLOC driver that Pinemeadow is selling, I don’t think that I would get snickers stepping up to the tee with this driver.  Usually my foursome waits until I hit to laugh, and I want to keep it that way.

Actually, the membership director told me that I should be spending money on lessons, not equipment, to improve my playing.  After another couple new clubs, I finally took that advice yesterday and took my first lesson.  Everything is all messed up now, but if it comes together, I am going to be doing more lessons- but I might just look at one of these a little later to replace my Big Bertha 454.

  • I mounted the new Mantara head I bought from Hireko this week on a Aldila TGw90 (X-flex) shaft and took it to the range yesterday.

The driver sets up nicely and the first ball off the tee was long and straight, albeit about 20 yds shorter than my DynaCraft DL Ti 360 driver.

But ....At the point of impact the noise generated had EVERYONE on the line stopping and staring. Think: aluminum-bat hitting a flagpole.

I hit it 3 more times just to verify it wasn’t a fluke. By that time I was flinching like I was shooting a .44 magnum. My drives suffered from the flinch-factor too. This club will not make you popular at the range, nor in your foursome.

If you spray your drives into the rough and need a club that will land you in the fairway consistently, the Mantara may be your club.

Just be prepared to invest in some hearing protection now, or hearing aids in the future.

  • I bought my Mantara off ebay in perfect condition for £26, unfortuately the postman delivered it as I was leaving the house to play in a competition at Lancaster Golf club. I decided to play in the comp. with the Mantara, hit a huge high slice off the first and thought that I had made a huge mistake, however things got a little better and I hit some pretty good tee shots allbeit a little on the high side for my liking. I have now changed the shaft from the Aldila V2000 reg, a very soft reg in my view to the shaft that was in my old faithfull Mizuno 001, the result is a much better ball flight, more consistenct and maybe a little longer than any driver I’ve had before all in all real value for money if you get the right shaft, Oh and by the way managed a third at Lancaster
