Golf Games: The Pro Am
The Pro-Am format of the 2011 Crowne Plaza Invitational—and I assume of most Pro Ams—was a five man variant of the classic Best Ball golf format. Each team in a Pro Am consists of four amateurs paired with a pro. Amateurs play with handicaps, and each player plays his or her own ball through the green. All USGA rules applied.
On each hole, the team score consists of either the best net score of the four amateurs, or the professional’s gross score. The highest score any team can take on a hole is a net par. The mantra of the Pro Am is that “Par is your partner.” To keep things moving along, as soon as a player can no longer score a net par—or better another player’s score—he or she should pick up.
Amateur handicaps were required to be validated by either a USGA Handicap Index, or a letter from the PGA Professional of your home course. Players with neither of those credentials were given a zero handicap.
