Golf Games: The Air Press
An Air Press is a one-hole best score bet. The “Presser” wins the bet if his score on the hole is lower than the “Pressed.” Otherwise, the Pressed collects. Ties go the Pressed.
The catch is that the bet must be called, or “pressed” when the opponent’s tee shot is in the air. This makes it interesting, because you know that there’s a potential that your playing partners will pounce on any shot that looks like it’s heading for the woods.
An Air Press can be doubled by the Pressed when the Presser’s tee shot is in the air. A player who already has teed off cannot call an Air Press (but the Pressed can obviously call the Double).
As is usual for this sort of thing, the stakes for a potential Air Press must be agreed upon before the round begins.
The Air Press was most famously described in the November 4, 2011 issue of Golf Digest.
