Golf Games: Chicago Handicaps

March 23, 2011

Chicago is game in which each player starts with a base number and then compares that to a final score based on the number of bogeys, pars, birdies and eagles they accumulate during the round. Each hole is scored as follows:

Bogey: 1 point
Par: 2 points
Birdie: 4 points
Eagle: 8 points

In two versions of the game, the base number is determined slightly differently.

Method One:
At the beginning of the round, each player is assigned a negative value based on their handicap. Scratch golfers get a -38, one-handicappers a -37 and so on. After each hole, the points scored are added to their base. At the end of the round, the player with the highest score wins—whether it be a negative or positive number.

Method Two:
At the beginning of the round, each player is assigned a positive value based on their handicaps. Scratch golfers get a +38, one-handicappers a +37 and so on. The player who gets closest to, or furthest over the starting value wins the round.
