Footjoy Superlite Spikeless Golf Shoes

For my friend Martin in Tennessee, here’s a pair of spikeless golf shoes. He’s written before that he likes to play in regular shoes, so I thought he might like these. They’e got all the styling of a classic golf shoe, without the spikes.

  • I like these!  I bought up three pairs of Etonic G-Sok spikeless shoes which are great.  They don’t wear down, and I can wear the all brown pair at work in anticipation of an after work 9-hole.  (and I wear any of the pairs to and from the course and in the clubhouse on a regular basis).  They have the traction control like these Footjoys do and it just about provides the same amount of traction as a soft spiked shoe.  I do wear Nike Shox as well, mostly because those have better ventilation for the foot and springs under the heel.

Last Saturday however, it was a brisk 34 at tee off, and I was wearing midtop hiking shoes because I had Toasty-Toes insoles and wanted to keep as warm as possible.  Given I had two birdies and make $23 on a skin, I may wear them again on the next sub-50 degree day.

  • Hey, what do you guys think about other types of “tractioned” spikeless shoes, like trail runners?  Anything else you might suggest?  Or can it really be anything that will help you keep a firm footing?

    Thanks!

  • Well the G-Sok and it looks like these FootJoys as well have traction control in regards to lateral movement, most trail runners would be mostly geared from front to back movement, but it would have some to prevent lateral movement as well.  But I play in Nikes with spikes, the Etonic Spikeless, and in running shoes which have all tread worn off (and last weekend in well worn hiking boots, so worn I would NOT take on anything more than a dry beginner trail anymore)

I am not sure in regards to where you are and what type of turf you have if any sort of spikeless would make sense.  Here in Memphis, the ground is generally pretty hard, and the grass is not as spongy as it in other regions (specifically comparing to Ohio and Eastern Tennessee courses I have played).  On those courses a spikeless shoe may not provide enough traction.

It also depends on your swing, balance and weight.  With my frame, I am rarely going to move off of my feet anyway.  But I have a friend who is about 5-4 and a buck-fifty, and he wears nothing but slip on Merrills to play, and he is pretty good.

Here is the strange thing, FootJoy is just coming out with these I think, and Etonic just ended the G-Sok line after a couple years.  Now Etonic may have been ahead of the time, and they don’t really have the market to make an impact, but FootJoy may change the game here a bit.  Lets see if Nike follows suit.

  • Thanks for the input.

I thought I was doing fine in some cross-training shoes (not much traction) unless I came across a side-hill lie and just about killed myself as my left foot slipped transferring weight on the downswing.  That day I went out and bought some FootJoys.  I’ve been mostly fine with them, but if they don’t seem quite as comfortable walking 18 as in my cross-trainers.  (yeah, yeah, I know wah-wah-wah smile ).

Anyway, I’ll plan to visit some sporting goods stores to see if anything catches my eye and would seem to give me some traction.
